Ukrainian authorities say they shot down more than 20 Russian drones in kyiv

Ukraine’s air defenses shot down this morning more than 20 Russian drones that were targeting the capital, Kiev, Ukrainian authorities reported this Sunday, who also reported one person injured by falling debris.

“The drones entered the capital in groups and from different directions. The air defense forces managed to destroy more than two dozen enemy drones,” Kiev’s military administration said on the Telegram messaging platform.

The exact number of downed drones will be announced later, the administration added, without specifying whether all the drones were destroyed in flight or if some hit the city.

Debris from the downed drones damaged cars, Kiev tram cables and an apartment, where one person was injured but not in danger of dying, the administration said.

A journalist from kyiv’s France-Press news agency heard at least a dozen explosions overnight.

The head of the capital’s military administration, Sergei Popko, said that the remains of the downed unmanned aerial vehicles fell in the Svyatoshinskyi, Podilskyi and Shevchenkivskyi districts.

In the Shevchenkivskyi district of central kyiv, they started a fire in a residential building that was put out by the owners, without causing any casualties, Popko said on Telegram.

In the Sviatoshinskyi district, located west of the capital, debris sparked a fire in Sovky Park, one of the city’s best-known public gardens, Kiev Mayor Vitali Klitschko said.

In the Podilskyi district of central Kiev, debris fell into an open space and doctors who arrived at the scene treated a person who suffered an attack of “acute stress,” according to Klitschko.

Also on Telegram, the mayor said more burning debris fell on a road in the central Solomyanskyi district.

In recent weeks, Russian forces have stepped up drone attacks, especially against the cities of Izmail and Reni in Odessa province, home to Danube river ports that Ukraine has used to export grain.

At the end of August, the spokesman for the Ukrainian military intelligence services, Vadim Skibitski, stated that Russian forces are carrying out reconnaissance of Ukrainian infrastructure and that they could begin a series of massive attacks with missiles and drones at the end of September or in October. .

The Russian military offensive on Ukrainian territory, launched on February 24 of last year, plunged Europe into what is considered the most serious security crisis since the Second World War (1939-1945).
