United Nations mourns the deaths of foreign volunteers in Donetsk

The United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator for Ukraine this Sunday regretted the death of two foreign volunteers in a Russian attack in the Donetsk region.

“It was another tragic day for civilians in Ukraine,” Denise Brown said in a statement published on the official page of the United Nations in Ukraine, referring to the Russian attack that hit the vehicle carrying four United Nations members on Saturday. – The government’s Road to Relief, which has been helping evacuate civilians from the front in Ukraine since 2022 and providing humanitarian aid to the areas most affected by the war.

The team – one German, one Swede, one Canadian and one Spanish – traveled from Sloviansk to Bakhmut, to assess the needs of civilians caught in the ongoing crossfire in the town of Ivanivske, Donetsk region.

Two volunteers (the Spanish woman, who led the organization, and the Canadian) were killed, while the other two were injured.

“Volunteers – many of them citizens, but also people who came from all over the world to help – are doing everything they can to provide some assistance to other citizens living under the devastation caused by the Russian invasion,” praised Denise Brown.

“Like every citizen, they are protected by international humanitarian law and every effort must be made to ensure their safety,” he stressed.

The Russian military offensive on Ukrainian territory, which started on February 24 last year, plunged Europe into what is considered the worst security crisis since World War II (1939-1945) and caused a large number of casualties over the past eighteen months. only soldiers, but also civilians, impossible to count as long as the conflict continues.
