The Republican president of the United States House of Representatives, Kevin McCarthy, yielding to pressure from the most conservative wing of his party, gave the green light this Tuesday to an investigation that could lead to the impeachment of US President Joe Biden.
“I am instructing our House committee [dos Representantes] open a formal impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden,” McCarthy said, alleging that the Democratic president “lied” about his son Hunter’s foreign dealings.
“House Republicans have uncovered serious and credible allegations about President Biden’s conduct,” McCarthy said, adding, “Taken together, these allegations paint a picture of a culture of corruption.”
The businesses of Hunter Biden – son of the American head of state – while Joe Biden was Barack Obama’s vice president, have been a constant target of Republicans.
However, to date, there is no credible evidence that Joe Biden was involved in any illegal acts.
For months, McCarthy has been under pressure from the party’s right wing, loyal to Donald Trump, to open an impeachment inquiry into the 80-year-old Biden.
The White House immediately condemned the move, calling it “extreme politics at its worst.”
“House Republicans have been investigating the president for nine months and have found no evidence of wrongdoing,” White House oversight and investigations spokesman Ian Sams said on the social network X, formerly known as Twitter.

He promised to hold a vote to open the impeachment trial, now he changed his mind because he has no support.

McCarthy, who was forced to cut a deal with the party’s most conservative wing to win the House speakership, said the “allegations of abuse of power, obstruction and corruption” against Biden “warrant further investigation by part of the House of Representatives.”
Democratic lawmakers denounced the move as a purely partisan exercise designed to avenge the House’s double impeachment of former Republican President Donald Trump.
