Russia accused Ukraine on Wednesday of carrying out a missile attack on the port city of Sevastopol in Crimea, a Ukrainian peninsula annexed by Moscow in 2014, wounding at least 24 people. According to Moscow, the attack damaged two ships that were undergoing repairs.
“Ukrainian forces launched an attack with ten cruise missiles on the S. Ordzhonikidze ship repair plant,” the Russian Defense Ministry said. in a message on Telegram.
Ukraine also “tried to carry out an attack with three unmanned boats on a detachment of Black Sea Fleet ships” during a sea crossing, he added.
“Air defense systems shot down seven cruise missiles and the patrol ship Vasily Bykov destroyed all unmanned boats,” Moscow said.
The attack took place around 3 a.m. (1 a.m. in Lisbon) and, despite activated anti-aircraft defenses, caused a fire at the Svemorzavod naval yard, the Russian-imposed governor of Sevastopol said.
“According to preliminary information, the fire was caused by a rocket attack,” Mijaíl Razvozhaev wrote on the messaging platform Telegram.
Razvozhaev, who went to the scene of the fire together with the emergency services, said: “A total of 24 people were injured as a result of the attackfour of which in a moderate manner.”
The person in charge of Sevastopol, whose port hosts the main base of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet, asked citizens not to broadcast videos of the “incident” so as not to “help the enemy.”
In Sevastopol, the large landing ship Ropucha and the submarine KILO may have been damaged as a result of the morning attack.
