Attack on port in Crimea hits Russian ship and submarine

The Ukrainian missile attack in the early hours of Wednesday on a Russian military shipyard in the port of Sevastopol, Crimea, caused damage to an amphibious ship and a submarine of the Russian fleet, according to Ukrainian military sources quoted in the publication RBK.

“Damage occurred at Sergo Ordzhonikidze’s ship repair factory in the city of Sevastopol,” representatives of the Ukrainian Military Secret (GUR) said, adding that the attack hit “a large landing ship and a submarine.”

According to two Russian Telegram channels, Baza and Shot, the submarine Rostov and the military ship Minsk are those who suffered damage during the attack, for which responsibility was claimed by the Ukrainian Air Force through its commander, Mikola Oleshchuk.

The Russian Defense Ministry said on Wednesday morning that Ukraine had deployed ten cruise missiles to attack the port of Sevastopol, seven of which were intercepted, as well as three Ukrainian Navy ‘drones’.

According to the Russian Defense Ministry, the damaged ships will be repaired and remain in service.

Russian authorities in the Crimean peninsula, annexed in 2014, reported that 24 people were injured in the attack.

“According to preliminary information, the fire was caused by a rocket attack,” Russian Governor of Sevastopol Mikhail Razvozhayev wrote on Telegram.

The attacked shipyard belongs to the main base of the Russian Navy on the Black Sea and is used for repairing and building military ships.

Ukraine has intensified drone, missile and landing craft attacks on Sevastopol and other parts of Crimea in recent months.

After the attack in Sevastopol, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said in statements on state television that Russia had no choice but to win in Ukraine.

“We have no other choice,” the minister replied to a question from a journalist from the Rossía-1 channel whether Russia will win in Ukraine, a country invaded by Moscow’s troops in February 2022.

Shoigu, who took part in the Russian-North Korean talks held today at the Vostochny cosmodrome, said Russian forces “are engaged in maintaining active defense in the necessary sectors.”

“In some parts this is [a defesa] It is more difficult, in other cases it is easier. But I can say that the boys act with confidence, the commanders act with confidence. We safely defend everything we need to defend,” he declared.

In early June, the Ukrainian army launched a counter-offensive on the country’s southern and eastern fronts and despite criticism of its slowness in the face of strong Russian defense lines, the Kiev government claims to have made significant progress and vacated vast areas.

The Ukrainian counter-offensive, which Russia in turn declared a failure, was accompanied by drone and missile attacks on the Russian rearguard, including in Moscow.
