In-person classes have been suspended today at Iran’s main scientific university following violent incidents between students and security forces in Tehran on Sunday night.
“Sharif University of Technology has announced that due to recent events and the need to protect students (…), all classes will be held virtually from Monday [hoje]Iran’s Mehr news agency, quoted by the French AFP, said.
According to the agency, about 200 students gathered at Sharif University of Technology on Sunday afternoon to hold a demonstration in which they chanted hostile chants against the Islamic Republic’s religious system and chanted phrases such as “Woman, life, freedom” or “Students.” . rather death than humiliation.”
Mehr also adds that students protested the detention of students during recent demonstrations following the death, on September 16, of 22-year-old girl Mahsa Amini, detained three days earlier in Tehran by the so-called customs police for violating the code of conduct. clothing, wearing the Islamic veil (‘hijab’) without covering the hair completely.
On Sunday evening, police fired paintballs, steel balls and tear gas at students, while security forces and plainclothes police remained vigilant at the north entrance to the university, the agency said.
To calm the situation, the science minister entered the university to talk to the students and started a dialogue with the troops stationed around the establishment, the same source added.
On Sunday, Iranian President Ebrahim Raissi accused Iran’s “enemies” of “conspiracy” against the country, saying they had failed to manipulate anti-government protests over the death of Mahsa Maini.
“As the Islamic Republic overcame economic difficulties to become more active in the region and in the world, enemies came into play with the intention of isolating the country. But they failed in this conspiracy,” the Iranian leader said in a statement.
According to the Iranian leader, the anti-government demonstrations protesting Amini’s death are being used by the West, especially the United States, to weaken the regime in Tehran.
The demonstrations are being violently crushed by Iranian security forces, who have killed 92 people since mid-September, according to several non-governmental organizations.
