An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.6 shook the Atlas region last Thursday and was felt in the city of Marrakesh. It was the first aftershock with a magnitude greater than 4.5 since the earthquake on the 8th, which caused nearly 3,000 deaths.

Today’s earthquake was registered at 06:53 local time (05:53 in Lisbon).

Since the earthquake with a magnitude between 6.8 and 7 (depending on the organization measuring it) occurred six days ago, there have been many aftershocks in the area and some have been felt, such as one on Wednesday with a magnitude of 3.9 .

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), today’s earthquake had a magnitude of 4.6 and occurred at a depth of 9.7 kilometers, near Ighil, the same village in the Atlas Mountains that was the epicenter of the earthquake on day 8.

The biggest shock killed more than 2,900 and injured more than 5,500, causing extensive damage in the Marrakech region.

The earthquake, whose epicenter was recorded in the town of Ighil, 63 kilometers southwest of the city of Marrakech, was felt in Portugal and Spain and reached a magnitude of 7.0 on the Richter scale, according to the National Institute of Geophysics of Marrakech. – the United States Geological Survey recorded a magnitude of 6.8.

This earthquake is the deadliest in Morocco since the earthquake that devastated Agadir, on the country’s west coast, on February 29, 1960, killing between 12,000 and 15,000, a third of the city’s population.

According to the Richter scale, earthquakes are classified based on their magnitude as micro (less than 2.0), very small (2.0-2.9), small (3.0-3.9), mild (4, 0-4.9), moderate (5.0-5.9), strong (6.0-6.9), large (7.0-7.9), important (8.0-8.9) , exceptional (9.0-9.9) and extreme (if greater than 10).
