Environmentalists painted Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate orange and demanded that the German government take urgent action on climate change.
Members of the Letzte Generation group used fire extinguishers loaded with paint to spray the six columns of the popular Berlin monument.
The group calls on Germany to stop using fossil fuels by 2030 and take short-term measures, such as imposing a speed limit of 100 kilometers per hour on highways, to reduce emissions faster.
“The protest is clear: it is time for political change” the group explained in a statement. “Away from fossil fuels and towards justice,” he emphasized.
Police surrounded the area around the Brandenburg Gate and reported arresting 14 people linked to Last Generation, a group known for protests in which activists cling to roads, blocking traffic and dividing German public opinion.
Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner condemned the group’s action as going beyond the legitimate boundaries of the protest.
“With this action the group not only damages the historic Brandenburg Gate, but also free speech on important issues of our time and the future” he stated, quoted by the German news agency DPA.
