The Quai d’Orsay invites French people passing through Iran this Friday to leave the country “as soon as possible”. The reason given: nationals are exposed to the risk of “arbitrary detention”.
“Any French visitor, including binationals, is exposed to a high risk of arrest, arbitrary detention and unfair trial. This risk also affects people who make a simple tourist visit. In the event of arrest or detention, respect for the rights fundamental rights and the safety of people are not guaranteed”, is written on the Quai d’Orsay website.
Tensions between France and Iran
This call comes in particular as Iranian state television broadcast Thursday “confessions” of espionage by two Frenchmen arrested in May in the country. In a released video, a woman says her name is Cécile Kohler and she is an operational intelligence agent for the DGSE.
She also claims that she and her spouse were in Iran “to prepare the conditions for the revolution and the overthrow of the Iranian Islamic regime.” Still according to her, they had to finance strikes and demonstrations and even use weapons “to fight against the police”.
Earlier this Friday, the Quai d’Orsay denounced “false accusations” from the Iranian authorities.
