A strong earthquake of magnitude 6.0 shook the South Island of New Zealand on Tuesday, according to the country’s official government website. The earthquake was recorded at 9:14 local time (22:14 in Lisbon) and had its epicenter 124 kilometers west of Christchurch, at a depth of 11 kilometers.
The data was released this Tuesday by the New Zealand Government’s Geonet website, which initially indicated a magnitude of 6.2.
At 09:25 local time an aftershock of 3.6 was recorded in the region.
New Zealand is located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, where tectonic plates collide and experiences frequent seismic and volcanic activity.
