The Secretary General of the United Nations (UN), António Guterres, stated this Wednesday that the Climate Ambition Summit, which took place in New York, demonstrated that it is possible to accelerate the “just transition towards a green global economy.”
In a closing speech at the Climate Ambition Summit, Guterres struck a tone of optimism, motivated by the “concrete measures” presented at the event for “a world of clean air and clean energy accessible to all.”
Guterres said important steps can be taken in the right direction: accelerating decarbonization and protecting those on the front lines of the climate crisis.
“We know that the Acceleration Agenda is practical, possible and achievable. Today we have seen evidence of this. And we know that it is essential to keep the 1.5 degree threshold (temperature increase) alive. But let us not get our hopes up. There is still a long way to go. long way to go to make the COP28 Summit a success,” he noted.
According to the United Nations, the Summit represents “a critical political milestone to demonstrate that there is a collective global will to accelerate the pace and scale of a just transition to a more equitable, renewable energy-based and climate-resilient global economy.”
The former Portuguese prime minister argued that all cities, companies and countries – and in particular the G20 – must demonstrate true ambition and deliver on their climate promises.
Among the urgent priorities for the coming months, the UN leader indicated that the G20 must demonstrate that it will accelerate the progressive elimination of fossil fuels, as well as the deployment of renewable energy.
Guterres called on developed countries to urgently deliver the promised $100 billion annually (€93.8 billion) and create a clear plan to double funding for green adaptation.
“We need everyone to participate to make this a reality,” said António Guterres.
The Secretary-General convened this high-level summit during the 78th UN General Assembly to urge leaders of governments, businesses, cities and regions, civil society and financial institutions to take action on climate action.
The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, was also present at this summit, which takes place at a time when the damage caused by the climate crisis is already considerable and global greenhouse gas emissions remain at a low level. record levels.
