The President of the Republic meets this Thursday with the community of Portuguese emigrants in the state of New York, on the fourth day of a visit to the United States of America to participate in the 78th session of the UN General Assembly .
The meeting with the Portuguese community will take place in Tarrytown, about 50 kilometers north of New York City, at a gala of the New York Portuguese American Leadership Conference (NYPALC) followed by a dinner.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa arrived in the United States of America on Sunday night to participate in the annual general debate between heads of State and Government of the 193 member countries of the United Nations (UN).
In his speech on Tuesday, he called on world leaders to move from promises to action on reform of the UN, particularly its Security Council, and global financial institutions.
“Year after year, we promise it. It’s time to deliver,” he said.
During this week, the head of state met with the UN Secretary General, António Guterres, and also participated in summits on sustainable development and climate and in an open debate in the UN Security Council on Ukraine.
Today, before the meeting in Tarrytown, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa’s program includes a tour of Manhattan, New York, with visits to Portuguese stores in Times Square.
The President of the Republic, who was in Canada the previous week on a five-day official visit, will travel back to Portugal on Friday night, after a meeting with the Portuguese community in the state of New Jersey.
In New York, both the President of the Republic and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, João Gomes Cravinho, have held bilateral meetings to, among other objectives, promote Portugal’s candidacy for a place as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council. in the 2027-2028 biennium.
