Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s government promised on Thursday that it will present a roadmap for the possible return to the use of nuclear energy in Italy within seven months.
Following the first meeting of the new National Platform for Sustainable Nuclear Energy, Italy’s Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security reported that the roadmap will form the basis for guidelines to be released within nine months, specifying possible resources, actions, investments and deadlines.
Italy closed its nuclear power plants in 1990, following the 1987 nuclear referendum, following the Chernobyl disaster.
However, there have been calls to reconsider the ban, given that nuclear energy has a low carbon footprint and because it was considered necessary to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to meet European and international targets for combating the climate crisis.
The country is also trying to boost its energy security after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
‘Italy cannot waste time’said Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Matteo Salvini, adding “returning to producing clean and safe energy through nuclear energy (technology) should be a clear objective, starting in the coming years”.
The Minister of the Environment and Energy Security, Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, guaranteed that Italy will build third-generation nuclear power plants, with innovative technology.
