Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky made a brief and unexpected stop in Poland on Saturday afternoon to thank and honor two Polish volunteers, at a time when relations between Kiev and Warsaw are under great tension.
Upon returning from the United States and Canada, Volodymyr Zelensky stopped in the city of Lublin, in eastern Poland, but, according to Polish media, he did not meet any Polish officials there.
“On the way to Ukraine, I had the honor of commemorating in Lublin the efforts of Polish citizens, volunteers and caring hearts,” Volodymyr Zelensky announced on his X account (former Twitter).
Poland last week extended its embargo on Ukrainian grain to protect, it says, the interests of its farmers, provoking an open crisis with kyiv, despite its close partner.

In response, Ukraine filed a complaint with the World Trade Organization (WTO) against Poland, Slovakia and Hungary, which also maintained their restrictions on Ukrainian grains, although lifted by Brussels.
On Tuesday, the Ukrainian president denounced at the UN that “some countries feign solidarity (with Ukraine, ed.) by indirectly supporting Russia.” These comments infuriated Warsaw, which summoned the Ukrainian ambassador.
Poland then announced that it would no longer deliver new weapons to kyiv, contenting itself with guaranteeing previously agreed deliveries and saying that it wanted to concentrate on modernizing its army.
Warsaw is one of kyiv’s main allies in its armed conflict against Russia and Western military aid mainly passes through its territory.
