Ukraine announced on Monday that it had killed the commander of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet in an unprecedented missile attack on the naval headquarters on the annexed Crimean peninsula that took place late last week.
It was a major blow to Moscow, which has suffered a series of attacks on the strategically important port city of Sevastopol in recent months. Remember, Ukraine promised to retake all territories occupied by Moscow, including Crimea.
“Thirty-four officers were killed, including the commander of the Black Sea Fleet. Another 105 passengers were injured,” Ukrainian special forces said in a statement on social media.
News agency AFP could not verify these statements, especially since Moscow practically does not communicate its losses in the war in Ukraine, even when it concerns high-ranking officials.

“The headquarters cannot be repaired,” the special forces added in the statement on the attack on Sevastopol, the largest city in Crimea, which was annexed by Russia in 2014.
The Russian Defense Ministry said on the day of the attack that a soldier was missing, after initially reporting one fatality.
The Communications Department of the Ukrainian Army reported at the time that “around 12:00 (10:00 Lisbon) the Ukrainian Armed Forces launched a successful attack on the headquarters of the Russian Black Sea Fleet Command in Sevastopol, which was temporarily occupied”.
