Poland’s President Andrzej Duda guaranteed on Monday that his country’s military support to Ukraine will not include recently acquired weapons, explaining that they will only serve to modernize his country’s armed forces.
“We are not going to spend billions on weapons and then offer them,” the Polish head of state said, referring to speculation that the new weapons systems acquired by Poland were intended for Ukrainian resistance to the Russian invasion.
“Sending (to Ukraine) new equipment that we are currently acquiring, such as the K2 howitzer launching system or the K9 tanks, is out of the question. This equipment should serve to strengthen the Polish army,” Duda assured. in an interview with the Polish newspaper Super Express.
“If old equipment is replaced by modern equipment, I have no problem sending it to the Ukrainians,” the president added, deploring the criticism of this decision from some parts of the population.
Duda was also upset last week by criticism from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during the debate at the United Nations General Assembly, who reprimanded allies for the unilateral measures they imposed to ban the import of Ukrainian grains.
“In Poland, many people felt insulted. Poles, both the government and ordinary people, sacrificed a lot to help Ukraine. Many even risked their lives,” the Polish president recalled.
“I will try to attribute this to emotions. Let’s not forget that Zelensky is under enormous pressure. He is sending people to the front, often to death. There are people dying in battle every day,” Duda concluded.
