War in Ukraine: kyiv claims to have killed commander of Russian Black Sea Fleet

Ukrainian special forces say the commander of the Russian Black Sea Fleet was killed in an attack on his headquarters in Crimea last Friday.

A new high-ranking Russian officer killed in kyiv? The Ukrainian military claimed on Monday to have eliminated the commander of the Russian Black Sea Fleet, Viktor Sokolov, by attacking his headquarters in Sevastopol, in annexed Crimea, on Friday.

“34 officers, including the commander of the Russian Black Sea Fleet, were killed” after the attack, Ukrainian special forces said on Telegram, without providing evidence.

“105 occupants were injured. The headquarters building cannot be repaired,” say the Ukrainian military.

Russian air defenses in trouble

Moscow, for its part, almost never reports its losses in Ukraine, even when it comes to senior officials.

Russia reported Friday that only one soldier was missing after the attack that severely damaged the headquarters of the Russian Black Sea Fleet.

Viktor Sokolov was appointed commander of the Russian Black Sea Fleet in August 2022, according to information from the Russian state agency Tass at the time.

This attack illustrates the difficulties of the Russian anti-aircraft defense in countering regular attacks on this Ukrainian peninsula, annexed in 2014 by Russia and which is an important logistical node for Moscow’s troops. Ukraine has vowed to retake all territories occupied by Moscow, including Crimea.
