Cravinho says Russia risks losing the war “in a humiliating way”

Foreign minister João Gomes Cravinho said in Paris on Thursday that sanctions against Russia will continue until the invasion of Ukraine ends, with Moscow at risk of losing the war “in a humiliating way”.

The Portuguese ruler believed the European Union’s eighth package of sanctions approved on Thursday against Russia is the kind of punishment that will continue as long as Russia pushes for war.

“As long as Russia is on Ukrainian territory, sanctions will be imposed on Russia. The whole world is already beginning to realize that Russia is not only going to not win this war, but also risk losing it in a humiliating way. side, if I started to think about how to get out of the situation that Russia itself has created,” said João Gomes Cravinho, questioned by journalists.

The minister will be in Paris on Friday for visits to UNESCO, the Louvre and for a bilateral meeting with his French counterpart, Catherine Colonna.

He argued that Moscow does not have the military capacity to maintain the annexations of the territory of Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhia and Kherson on the ground.

“At this point, I believe it has been shown that Russia does not have the military capacity for the annexations it claims to have made recently and which have no validity and which no one acknowledges,” the minister said.

Portugal will continue to support Ukraine, guaranteed João Gomes Cravinho.

“I don’t think we should be intimidated by the loose and irresponsible words we occasionally hear from Russian officials. We will support the Ukrainian armed forces, politically and financially, until Ukraine achieves its objectives,” he said.

Support for Ukraine was the subject of the meeting with UNESCO director Audrey Azoulay.

“We talked about the difficulties that exist in the field of World Heritage, we are currently experiencing a tragic moment of war, where there is theft of the invasion of Ukraine by Russia, destruction of heritage in Ukraine and we talked about the importance of of the protection of this heritage and UNESCO’s role in the context of the war,” he said.
