The Russian justice system on Tuesday rejected opposition leader Alexei Navalny’s appeal against his 19-year prison sentence for extremism, a verdict that should send him to prison in even harsher conditions.
The appeal court, Judge Viktor Rogov said, decided to “leave Mr. Navalny’s decision in the first instance unchanged.”
The Kremlin’s leading critic appeared in court today via video conference from prison.
Navalny, who was already in prison accused of fraud before this new conviction, considers these trials political revenge for his fight against Russian President Vladimir Putin and against elite corruption, as well as for his criticism of the invasion of Ukraine.
