Estimated inflation in Spain rises to 3.5% in September

Prices in Spain rose 3.5% in September, nine tenths more than in August, when inflation was 2.6%, as reported this Thursday by the National Institute of Statistics (INE).

This has been the third consecutive month of increased inflation (increase in prices compared to the same month last year) in Spain, after a downward trend last year.

The evolution of prices in September was due, according to the INE, to the increase in fuel and electricity prices.

Core inflation (which excludes energy and fresh and unprocessed food) was 5.8% in September, three tenths less than in August.

Spain ended last year with the lowest inflation rate in the European Union (5.7%), after the first half of 2022 had some of the highest values ​​and July recorded the highest inflation in the country since 1984 ( 10.77%).

Throughout 2022, Spain approved several packages of measures to respond to inflation greater than 3% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), around 45 billion euros, including direct aid to consumers and companies and tax benefits. , such as the reduction of VAT (consumption tax). ) on electricity and gas at 5% or a discount of 20 cents per liter on the purchase of fuel.

To try to respond to the increase in food prices, a new set of measures came into force in January, including the suspension of VAT on some foods and products considered basic.

In August of this year, Spain still had one of the lowest inflation rates in the European Union, according to the most recent data.
