The High Representative for Foreign Affairs insisted this Monday that the European Union (EU) “is and continues to be the first support” of Ukraine in the fight against the Russian invasion.
“When we are together, we are stronger. The EU is and remains the first support of Ukraine. Thank you Volodymyr Zelensky [Presidente ucraniano] and Dmytro Kuleba [ministro dos Negócios Estrangeiros ucraniano] for welcoming us today,” wrote Josep Borrell on the social network X (formerly Twitter).
The 27 foreign ministers met this Monday in Kiev with their Ukrainian counterpart and the head of state of the country that has been trying to repel a large-scale invasion of the Russian Federation since February 24 of last year.
The meeting was not publicized and was the first time that a meeting between EU leaders with the diplomacy portfolio on support for Ukraine took place in the invaded country.
The Portuguese Minister of Foreign Affairs revealed at the end of the meeting that the EU will contribute an additional 20 billion euros for the reconstruction of the country. This surprise meeting also came with the promise of greater military support that the country has been demanding almost daily, as well as sanctions against Moscow.
