Russia says ‘fatigue’ with Western support for Ukraine will grow

This statement from Moscow comes as European Union foreign ministers gathered in kyiv for a “historic meeting” aimed at expressing their “solidarity” with Ukraine.

The Kremlin assured on Monday that “fatigue” with support for Ukraine would increase among Westerners, at a time when European Union foreign ministers are trying to prove the opposite by meeting in Kiev.

“The fatigue that the completely absurd support for the kyiv regime will increase in different countries, particularly in the United States,” said Russian presidential spokesman Dmitri Peskov.

The future of U.S. aid is up in the air as it was left out of an interim funding deal to avoid a federal government shutdown. However, US President Joe Biden wanted to be reassuring and promised not to “abandon” Ukraine.

“Divisions in the political establishment”?

Dmitri Peskov said he hoped the United States would remain part of the equation. “Of course, the United States will remain involved in this conflict, in fact directly,” he told reporters who asked him about American aid.

But Western “fatigue” will create more “divisions in the political establishment” and lead to “contradictions,” Dmitri Peskov predicted.

These statements come when the foreign ministers of the European Union met on Monday in Kiev for a “historic meeting” aimed at expressing their “solidarity” with this country that is facing the Russian invasion and that aspires to integrate into the EU.

In the face of a slow Ukrainian counteroffensive and fears of a decline in Western support for Ukraine, it is also about showing Russia that “it should not count” on the “tiredness” of the European Union, said French Minister Catherine Colonna.
