The leader of the United States House of Representatives, Republican Kevin McCarthy, was removed from office, with Democrats joining the radical Republican wing in the vote that dictated his departure.
The 216-210 vote, forced by a contingent formed by the far right wing of the Republican Party, puts the House of Representatives (lower house of Representatives) and its Republican leadership in an unprecedented situation.
For the first time in its 234-year history, the House approved a resolution “to vacate the office of the president.”
Congressman Matt Gaetz, R-Florida, introduced the motion to impeach the House leader, bringing together conservative Republican critics and many Democrats who say McCarthy is unworthy of leadership.
The next steps are uncertain, but there is no obvious successor to lead the Republican majority in the House of Representatives, the Associated Press (AP) reported.
