The leader of the United States House of Representatives, Republican Kevin McCarthy, was removed from office this Tuesday, and the Democrats joined the radical right in the vote that dictated his departure.
The 216-210 vote, forced by a contingent formed by the most right wing of the Republican Party, throws the House of Representatives (lower house) and its Republican leadership into an unprecedented situation.
Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., introduced the motion to remove the House leader, rallying conservative Republican critics and many Democrats who say McCarthy is unworthy of leadership.
The next steps are uncertain, but there is no obvious successor to lead the Republican majority in the House of Representatives, the Associated Press (AP) reported.
