There are two Portuguese among the fatalities of the bus crash in Venice, the spokesman for the mayor of Venice, Italy, said on Wednesday, quoted by AFP. The information was confirmed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“The death of two Portuguese citizens and one injured following a bus accident in the city of Venice has been confirmed,” an official source of Portuguese diplomacy said. to Lusa.

The Ministry of The Foreign Office also stressed that it “regrets what happened and, through the Portuguese Embassy in Rome, is monitoring the situation.”

The bus crash killed 21 people on Tuesday, including a child. Fifteen injuries are still reported.

The fatalities also included nine Ukrainians, four Romanians and three Germans, according to the spokesman for the mayor of Venice. A South African man and a Croatian national also died, as did the Italian driver, he told AFP.

The Croatian victim was a woman honeymooning in Venice while her husband is in hospital, Italian media said.

Fifteen people remain in hospital, 13 of whom have been identified as foreigners, the Veneto region said.

According to AFP, relatives of the victims arrived in Venice from other countries today.

Venice authorities today asked the Italian government to declare three days of mourning in the region over the deaths of 21 people on a bus that fell from a viaduct around 7:30 p.m.

The bus passengers were mainly young foreign tourists returning to Venice from a nearby campsite.

The vehicle was an electric bus that caught fire after falling from a height of about 15 meters, knocking over the protection of the overpass.

Firefighters said the bus caught fire after falling from a bridge that crosses a railway line connecting the Mestre and Marghera neighborhoods in the northern Italian city.

Mauro Luongo, Venice’s fire chief, told AFP that “the impact was terrible because the bus fell from a height of more than 10 meters.”

Emergency teams spent hours removing bodies from the wreckage, a situation described as “apocalyptic” by Venice Mayor Luigi Brugnaro.
