Iranian activist Narges Mohammadi, who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday, “exploded with joy” and “celebrated” with her fellow prisoners “in her cell” in Iran, her family said in a statement to AFP on Saturday.
“Narges “I learned that I had been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize late Friday afternoon through messages from the men’s department, which has easier access to phones on Fridays,” the family said.
The released statement reads: “Narges and her cellmates were overjoyed and celebrated this victory in their cell.”
The 2023 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to the Iranian activist in the name of “the struggle of women in Iran against oppression,” as announced by the Norwegian Nobel Committee.
According to the commission, the choice of this activist, vice-president of the Center for Human Rights Defenders and currently in prison, was also due to “her struggle to promote human rights and freedom for all”.
“The demonstrators’ motto – ‘Woman-Life-Freedom’ – adequately expresses the dedication and work of Narges Mohammadi,” said Norwegian Committee President Berit Reiss-Andersen, who announced the award in Oslo .
In total, the foundation says, the Iranian regime detained this human rights activist thirteen times, convicted him five times, and sentenced him to a total of 31 years in prison and 154 lashes.
The activist has not seen her children, who are in Paris, for eight years and has been in solitary confinement for a long time.
