“More than 500 targets” of the Islamic group Hamas, in power in Gaza, and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad were hit this morning by airstrikes and artillery fire in the Gaza Strip, the Israeli army announced.
“Overnight, fighter jets, helicopters, aircraft and artillery attacked more than 500 Hamas and Islamic Jihad terrorist targets,” the military said in a statement.
The Islamic group Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israeli territory this Saturday, called Operation “Al-Aqsa Storm”, with the launch of thousands of rockets and the incursion of armed militiamen by land, sea and air.
In response to the surprise attack, Israel bombed several Hamas facilities in the Gaza Strip from the air, in an operation it called “Iron Swords.”
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared that Israel is “at war” with Hamas.
The latest report from the Palestinian Ministry of Health recorded, on Sunday, 413 deaths due to Israeli airstrikes in Gaza, bringing the total number of deaths on both sides of the armed clashes that began on Saturday to more than 1,100.
According to the ministry, cited by the Spanish agency EFE, among the 413 dead there are 78 minors and 41 women.
In the last few hours, two towers in Gaza City were attacked and the number of victims is likely to rise.
These victims were added to the more than 700 deaths in the latest report from the Israeli Ministry of Health, also published on Sunday.
The high number of deaths confirmed in just over 24 hours is unprecedented in the history of Israel, comparable only to the bloody first Arab-Israeli war of 1948, after the founding of the State of Israel.
