Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defended this Monday the formation of an “emergency national unity government”, on the third day of the offensive launched by the Palestinian Islamic movement Hamas, which left at least 800 dead in Israel.
“I call on opposition leaders to immediately form an emergency national unity government, without preconditions,” Netanyahu said in a televised speech.
Netanyahu, who leads a coalition of right-wing, far-right and ultra-Orthodox parties, faces one of the biggest crises in the country’s history.
In his speech, the head of the Israeli Government detailed the five points of his program: regain control of the territory and “eliminate the terrorists” still present in Israel; carry out a “massive” attack on Hamas with “unprecedented force”; “reinforce the fronts” in the north and against Hezbollah and in the West Bank; continue the campaign to gain support from the international community; and finally “the unity of the people” with the formation of a government of national unity.
The Palestinian Islamic group Hamas, considered terrorist by the European Union and the United States, launched a surprise attack on Israeli territory on Saturday, under the name of operation “Al-Aqsa Storm”, with the launch of thousands of rockets and the incursion of armed militiamen by land, sea and air.
In response to the surprise attack, Israel airstriked several Hamas facilities in the Gaza Strip in an operation it dubbed “Iron Swords.”
Benjamin Netanyahu declared on Saturday that Israel is “at war” with Hamas and began a counterattack with air, naval and ground forces in the Gaza Strip, and the persecution of members of the Islamist movement in Israeli territory.
The death toll on the Israeli side rose to 300 in the first 24 hours of the rise, and now stands at more than 900, including 100 bodies found by the Jewish rescue organization Zaka in a small community farm (kibbutz) that before the attack It had a thousand people. .
