The US president was questioned as part of the investigation into a series of confidential official documents found in a former office as well as a family home, the White House said.
The interrogation, described as voluntary, took place on Sunday and Monday, indicating that Joe Biden “and the White House are cooperating” with the investigation, led by special prosecutor Robert Hur, according to a statement released on Monday.
In the same note, spokesperson Ian Sams assured that, “as appropriate”, the Presidency publicly provided “relevant updates, being as transparent as possible and consistent with protecting and preserving the integrity of the investigation.”
At the end of 2022, a series of confidential documents, the exact number and contents of which are unknown, were found in Joe Biden’s home in Delaware, in the eastern United States, and in his former office in Washington.
The documents date back to the period in which Biden was vice president (2009-2017) and the three decades that the Democrat spent in the Senate, the upper house of the US parliament, during which he was closely involved in the country’s foreign policy.
The discovery of the documents caused embarrassment to the White House, as was learned shortly after the case of more than 100 confidential documents found by the FBI in the mansion of former President Donald Trump (2017-2021), in Mar-a-Lago (Florida ). .
United States law requires presidents and vice presidents to return all official documents, communications, and other notes to the National Archives.
The White House and Biden have highlighted their complete willingness to collaborate in the investigations and have tried to distance themselves from Trump’s case. The current President assured that he was unaware of having those documents.
On January 12, Attorney General Merrick Garland moved forward with the appointment of conservative Robert Hur as special prosecutor to analyze classified documents found in private locations, including the home of former Vice President Mike Pence.
Pence’s case is very different from Trump’s, as the former vice president requested a review of documents stored in his home as soon as other documents were discovered in his former office.
The Justice Department is also trying to determine whether Trump, or anyone on his team, criminally obstructed the investigation by refusing to hand over the documents.
The situation forced the United States National Archives to ask all former presidents and vice presidents of the country to review their personal records to determine if they have confidential documents.
