Brazil called a new meeting of the UN Security Council for Friday, to discuss the situation in the Gaza Strip, the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Wednesday.
The head of Brazilian diplomacy, Mauro Vieira, interrupted a trip through Asia to go to New York, to participate in the meeting, called by Brazil, which currently presides over the Security Council.
Brazil had already called an urgent meeting of the Security Council, “to address the situation in the Gaza Strip”, for October 8, a day after the surprise attack by the Islamist movement Hamas against Israel.
At the end of Sunday’s meeting, held behind closed doors, several members of the Security Council condemned the Hamas offensive, although the United States regretted the lack of unanimity.
The death toll in the Gaza Strip has risen to 1,200, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry, following an increase in Israeli bombing of the Hamas-controlled Palestinian enclave since 2007.

The government official said children could never be taken hostage, no matter where in the world, according to a note posted on social media.
“Hamas needs to free the Israeli children who were kidnapped from their families. Israel needs to stop the bombing so that Palestinian children and their mothers leave the Gaza Strip across the border with Egypt. There needs to be a minimum of humanity in the madness of war,” he said.
“An international humanitarian intervention is urgent. A ceasefire is urgent in defense of Israeli and Palestinian children. Brazil, in the provisional presidency of the UN Security Council, will join the efforts to bring the conflict to an immediate end and definitive. And he will continue working to promote peace and defend human rights in the world,” he concluded.
The Israeli Ministry of Defense affirmed, on Wednesday, that there are Brazilians among the hostages that Hamas took in the offensive launched against Israel, where 14,000 Brazilians reside, plus another six thousand in Palestinian territories.
