US Secretary of State Antony Blinken vowed Thursday that his country will always stand by Israel’s side, arguing that the Palestinians’ “legitimate aspirations” are not represented by the Islamist movement Hamas.
‘Maybe you’re strong enough to take care of yourself. But as long as the United States exists, you’ll never need that. We will always be with you.’Blinken promised during a press conference in Tel Aviv after his meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
The head of US diplomacy condemned the attack launched by the Hamas group against Israel last Saturday, also saying the movement committed “heinous acts against the interests of the Palestinian people.”
“There is no pretext for these heinous acts,” Blinken emphasized, asserting that “Israel has the right and obligation to defend itself,” but in a proportionate manner and with respect for human rights.
“That is why it is so important to take all possible precautions to prevent harm to civilians and why we mourn the loss of every innocent life. Citizens of all faiths and nationalities were killed.”Blinken recalled.
Blinken traveled to Tel Aviv on Thursday, where, in addition to meeting with Netanyahu, he discussed US support for Israel in the war against Hamas with his Israeli counterpart Eli Cohen.
