The European Commission announced on Thursday that it is investigating whether the social network X complies with European legislation on digital services, after receiving “indications” of an “alleged dissemination of illegal content.”
It involves “the dissemination of terrorist and violent content and incitement to hatred.”
In this same social network, the European Commissioner for the Internal Market, Thierry Breton, wrote: “The Digital Services Law [DSA, na sigla em Inglês] is here to protect both our freedom of expression and our democracies, even in times of crisis. “We have sent X a formal request for information, a first step in our investigation to determine whether they comply with the DSA.”
The EU Executive indicated that it is examining X’s policies and practices regarding warnings about illegal content, the handling of complaints, risk assessment and measures to reduce detected risks, according to the statement.
The Commission sent X a “formal request for information based on the Digital Services Act.”
The social media conglomerate led by Elon Musk must respond by October 18 on the functioning of its crisis response protocol, and by October 31 on other issues raised by Brussels.
