Return to the shelters for the inhabitants of Kyiv. As Russian forces launched attacks in the capital as in many other cities across the country on Monday morning, Ukrainians are forced to once again take refuge in safe places, safe from bombs.
However, it is not about giving up: by singing the Ukrainian anthem in their respective shelters, the inhabitants of Kyiv show signs of resilience, breaking with the image of a people with low morale.
In particular, a video filmed inside a subway entrance is circulating on social networks. Shouts of resistance, applause… Sitting on the stairs, on the ground or standing on the docks, dozens of Ukrainians sing their country’s anthem with one voice.
Children sing with their hands on their hearts
In another shelter, children who have been given something to look after interrupt their activities to sing, some with their hands at heart level, the famous anthem. Its president, Volodymyr Zelensky, showed his resistance on Monday: “Ukraine cannot be intimidated. It can only be even more united. Ukraine cannot be stopped,” he said, he chanted in a video message.
On Monday morning, the capital effectively woke up under bombardment. In an attempt to limit the risks in the event of a new attack by Russian forces, the authorities have decreed the temporary closure of the electricity grid.
The strikes have also focused on other cities in the country, such as Dnipro, Zaporizhia or Lviv. In total, according to a latest report from the authorities, 11 deaths and 89 injuries are regrettable.
