British actor Michael Caine, 90, decided to retire from acting after the recent premiere of the last film he took part in, “The Great Escaper”, shot with the late Glenda Jackson, he announced to the BBC.
“I keep saying I’m going to retire. Well, now I’m going,” said the actor, who has a British knighthood, after receiving good reviews for his latest performance.
With an extensive filmography that includes films like “Zulu” and “The Italian Job,” Caine has appeared in more than 100 films over a career spanning seven decades.
In the latest film, released on October 6, he plays World War II veteran Bernie Jordan, who escaped from a nursing home to attend the D-Day celebrations in France.
“The only roles I can get now are men who are 90. Or maybe 85,” he said on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme.
Caine added that “at 90 you don’t get leading men, you get young, good-looking boys and girls.”
Michael Caine confided that he turned it down three times before accepting the final role, which he played alongside Glenda Jackson, who died in June.
The actor’s withdrawal comes a month before the release of Caine’s novel “Deadly Game,” about the adventures of a detective who disrespects bureaucracy.
“It has been my ambition for years to… thriller. It is the genre I most enjoy reading and I am looking forward to working on ‘Deadly Game’,” emphasized the actor, who expressed the hope that “readers will enjoy getting to know his character, Harry Taylor “.
