Biden talks with Abbas about the right to self-determination and with Netanyahu about support for Israel

US President Joe Biden yesterday told Palestinian Authority leader Mahmud Abbas that “Hamas does not defend the right of the Palestinian people to dignity and self-determination,” after stating in another phone call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu the “unwavering American support for Israel.”

In the conversation with Abbas, Biden condemned the terrorist group’s “brutal attack” on Israel. He also reported on U.S. efforts, along with the United Nations, Egypt, Jordan, Israel and others, to ensure humanitarian aid reaches civilians in Gaza.

According to the report of the call, made by the White House, “it also described U.S. efforts to coordinate with partners on ways to prevent the conflict from spreading,” discussing with Abbas “how to improve stability in the West Bank can be preserved” and in the Middle East.

The US president also spoke again on the phone with Netanyahu, informing him of US military support and repeating his warning against anyone who wants to expand the conflict.

Biden also spoke about U.S. efforts to work with other countries to ensure “that innocent civilians have access to water, food and medical treatment,” and reiterated his support for “all efforts to protect civilians.”

The US president also discussed the need for “all countries to unequivocally condemn Hamas as a terrorist organization that does not represent the aspirations of the Palestinian people.”
