The death toll from Hurricane Ian, one of the most violent in recent US history, which hit the southeast of the country in late September, reached 107 dead on Monday, local authorities reported.
Only Florida, the most affected state, has at least 102 deaths, according to the latest figures from forensic authorities. Five other people have died in North Carolina.
Months to rebuild everything
These official figures are subject to change, with some US media reporting an even higher number. However, its death toll is still far less than that of Katrina, which devastated Louisiana and killed 1,800 people in 2005.
Ian, a Category 4 hurricane when it made landfall in Florida, had submerged entire neighborhoods, destroying homes, bridges or power lines. The hurricane then weakened as it moved into the Atlantic, before strengthening again and reaching South Carolina, affecting North Carolina as well.
Officials said it would take months and $50 billion or more to rebuild Florida’s devastated coastal areas.
