The Israeli Air Force is preparing “an aggressive approach” to the intervention in the Gaza Strip, providing air support to the Army on the ground, the first of its kind since Operation Cast Lead in 2008.
In statements to the Israeli newspaper Haaretz, and quoted by the Europa Press agency, the head of the Israeli Air Force announced that his planes are preparing the conditions for a possible large-scale ground intervention by the Army.
“We are diligently eliminating ground and air threats and will take an aggressive approach to ensure our armed forces can act effectively during a ground operation,” Gen. Tomer Bar told the newspaper.
The Israeli commander also warned that the armed forces have the capacity to deal with the current escalation of fighting in northern Israel, which is currently the scene of exchanges of fire between Hezbollah, another Islamist paramilitary movement, and the Israeli army.
“Although we are currently concentrated in the south, we are fully prepared for any development in the north,” he said, adding that “the air force is well equipped (…) to respond to threats and participate in a theater of war.” in the region”.
The Islamist group Hamas launched a surprise attack against Israel on the 7th with the launch of thousands of rockets and the incursion of armed militiamen by land, sea and air.
In response, Israel bombed several Hamas infrastructures in the Gaza Strip from the air and imposed a total siege on the territory, cutting off water, fuel and electricity supplies.
The attacks have already caused thousands of deaths and injuries in both territories.
