Iran’s Foreign Minister Hosein Amir Abdolahian warned of possible “preventive measures” in the coming hours by “resistance” groups against Israel if attacks on Gaza continue.
“Possible preventive action by the resistance is expected in the coming hours,” Abdolahian said on Iranian state television late Monday.
The so-called Axis of Resistance is an informal alliance led by Iran and made up of Islamist militant organizations such as the Lebanese Shiite movement Hezbollah, the Palestinian movement Hamas and Islamic Jihad.
The head of Iranian diplomacy assured that the “resistance leaders will not allow the Zionist regime to do whatever it wants in Gaza” and stressed that they have “the capacity to wage a long war with the enemy.”
The Hezbollah leader “said that if they do not take preventive measures, they will have to fight against the Zionist forces in Beirut,” the capital of Lebanon, said Abdolahian, who met with Hassan Nasrallah a few days ago.
Iran has warned on several occasions that if Israel’s bombing and siege of the Gaza Strip continues, other fronts in the conflict could emerge.
Hosein Amir Abdolahian had previously said that “time for political solutions is running out; the likely expansion of the war to other fronts is becoming inevitable.”
On Monday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned Iran and Hezbollah not to test Israel’s military in the north of the country.
The Islamist movement Hamas launched a surprise attack against Israel on October 7, launching thousands of missiles and raiding armed militants, killing 1,400 people.
In response, Israel bombed several infrastructures in the Gaza Strip, which it identified as belonging to Hamas, and imposed a total siege on the territory, cutting off water, fuel and electricity supplies.
Reprisal attacks carried out since October 9 have killed more than 2,800 people, mostly Palestinian civilians, including hundreds of children, according to local Palestinian authorities.
Benjamin Netanyahu affirmed that Israel is “at war” with Hamas and that the Israeli army has been preparing a ground offensive in the small enclave of Gaza that has been under an Israeli blockade by land, air and sea for 15 years.
