Some 20,000 people were temporarily evacuated from their homes in a Frankfurt district in central Germany after the discovery of a 500-kilogram bomb dating from World War II, firefighters revealed on Monday.
The US bomb was discovered Monday morning in the Bockenheim district, where a university campus is located.
The local fire department explained that the explosive is scheduled to be deactivated on Wednesday, with some 20,000 people having to leave their homes until safety is guaranteed.
Underground cities in Germany are still littered with unexploded bombs that are regularly discovered during construction 77 years after World War II.
In 2017, the discovery in Frankfurt of a 1.4-tonne bomb caused the evacuation of 65,000 people.
In December 2021, a World War II-era bomb exploded at a construction site near the Munich station in southern Germany, injuring four people and disrupting rail traffic.
