Wars “also have their rules”: Josep Borrell condemns the water cuts in Gaza

The head of European diplomacy warned this Wednesday that actions such as cutting off the water supply in Gaza “are not compatible” with international law and defended a European response based on firmness, humanity and coherence.

“We repeat once again: Israel has the right to defend itself. It always has and whoever was attacked in such a brutal way would have the right to defend himself,” said the high representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, in a debate in the plenary session of the European Parliament, in Strasbourg.

“We are all united in saying that the right to self-defense has its limits, the limits set by international law, especially international humanitarian law,” he said.

Wars, he stressed, “also have their rules”, included in international law.

“Cutting off the water supply and more is not compatible with the Law of War. There is no longer water in Gaza, there are more than 3,000 dead and a quarter of them are children. We cannot hold all Palestinians responsible for the crime criminal actions of Hamas,” he stressed.
