Russia’s Foreign Minister on Thursday denounced “the dangerous” military policy of the United States and its Japanese and South Korean allies toward North Korea, following talks in Pyongyang with North Korean leaders.
“Like our North Korean friends, we are deeply concerned about the intensification of military activities by the United States, Japan and South Korea in the region and about Washington’s policies (…). We oppose this line, which is unconstructive and dangerous.”Serguei Lavrov declared to the press.
North Americans are “move strategic infrastructure to the region, including nuclear elements”, he said, without elaborating.
‘We oppose this unconstructive and dangerous line’he added.
On an official visit to North Korea since Wednesday, Lavrov said Moscow, Beijing and Pyongyang are “trying to propose constructive alternatives to the escalation of tensions” in the region.
“We are in favor of establishing a regular negotiation process on security issues on the Korean Peninsula without preconditions”he told reporters.
This visit to North Korea comes at a time of rapprochement between Moscow and Pyongyang, amid conflict in Ukraine, with the United States fearing that Russia will seek to obtain weapons for an offensive against its North Korean neighbor.
In September, Russian President Vladimir Putin hosted North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in the Russian Far East for a summit with great pomp, but at the time the Kremlin guaranteed that it had not signed an agreement at the time.
According to the Kremlin, Lavrov’s talks this week are expected to lay the groundwork for a future Putin visit to North Korea.
“Contacts between the two capitals will continue,” the head of Russian diplomacy emphasized.
