Death toll rises to 19 in Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities

At least 19 people were killed and 105 others wounded in Russian attacks in several Ukrainian cities on Monday, according to a new report released Tuesday by Ukrainian authorities.

“According to preliminary data, 19 people were killed and 105 were injured,” the Ukrainian state service for emergency situations reported on the Telegram social network.

The earlier figure, published on Monday night, indicated 14 dead and 97 wounded in Russian shelling of several Ukrainian cities, including kyiv, which had not been attacked by Russian troops since late June.

In addition to kyiv, Lviv, Dnipro, Zaporizhia, Sumi, Kharkiv and Jytomyr and many other cities were hit by Russian missiles on Monday.

More than 300 towns across the country were left without electricity as a result of these attacks, which notably affected power plants, according to the same source.

On Tuesday morning, a new Russian attack hit the southern city of Zaporizhia, which has been hit by Russian shelling in recent weeks. Twelve S-300 missiles hit civilian infrastructure and killed one person, according to the state emergency service.

Russian President Vladimir Putin justified these “massive” bombings by the “terrorist” attack carried out on Saturday by kyiv on the bridge that connects Russian territory with Crimea (south), the Ukrainian peninsula annexed by Moscow in 2014.

Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmygal said that 11 major infrastructures had been damaged in eight regions apart from the capital.

Ukraine has announced that it will stop exporting electricity to Europe following these attacks, as power cuts are affecting many regions.

The military offensive launched on February 24 by Russia in Ukraine has already caused the flight of more than 13 million people -more than six million internally displaced persons and more than 7.5 million to European countries-, according to the most recent data from the UN, which places this refugee crisis as the worst in Europe since the Second World War (1939-1945).

The Russian invasion -justified by Russian President Vladimir Putin, with the need to “denazify” and demilitarize Ukraine for Russia’s security- was condemned by the generality of the international community, which has responded by sending weapons to Ukraine and imposing Russia since political and economic point of view. sanctions
