An opinion poll in Israel shows that the majority of citizens believe that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu should publicly take responsibility for the security failures that led to the Hamas terrorist attacks on the 7th.
In the study, which was published on Friday by the Maariv newspaper, 80% of those interviewed say Netanyahu must take responsibility, which he has not done publicly so far, and this view is shared by 69% of those who voted for him in the November 2022 elections. in which his party, Likud, won, which then led a governing coalition with other far-right and ultra-Orthodox formations.
For the time being, the only ones who have taken responsibility for the mistakes made that made possible the terrorist attack on the 7th of this month are: the Chief of the General Staff of the Israel Defense Forces, Herzi Halevi, the Director of the Internal intelligence agency, Shin-bet; the Minister of Defense, Yoav Gallant, and the head of the Treasury, Bezalel Smotrich, but no resignations have yet taken place in the chain of command.
When asked who would be the best Prime Minister for Israel at the moment, 49 percent of respondents voted for National Unity Party (center-right) leader and former Defense Minister Benny Gantz, who until now was in the opposition but who accepted Netanyahu’s call to stand down after the Hamas attacks to join an emergency government.
As for what response Israel should give to Hamas, 65 percent of respondents support carrying out a ground offensive in Gaza, compared to 21 percent who reject it.
There are even 51 percent who are in favor of expanding the ground offensive to the border with Lebanon, to combat the Shia group Hezbollah, which has also launched attacks on Israeli territory.
In recent days there have been street protests against the stance of the Israeli government, which is accused of making several security failures that led to Hamas’ unprecedented attack.
In the specific case of the hostages, the families accuse Netanyahu of lacking agility and effectiveness in handling the case and of providing little information.
