Iran sentences journalists who reported Mahsa Amini’s death to prison

Elaheh Mohammadi was sentenced to six years in prison for collaborating with the United States, five years for conspiracy against the country’s security and one year for propaganda against the Islamic Republic, according to Mizan Online.

Photojournalist Niloufar Hamedi was sentenced to seven years in prison for collaborating with the United States, five years in prison for conspiracy against the country’s security and one year in prison for propaganda against the Islamic Republic, the same source added, quoted by Efe agencies. AFP.

In September, Elnaz Mohammadi, of the Hamamihan daily, and Negin Bagheri, of the Haft-e Sobh newspaper, were also convicted and will serve just under a month of their sentences in detention, lawyer Amir Raisian said.

“The remainder of the sentence will be suspended for five years,” he added, as quoted by French agency AFP.

During this period, the two journalists will have to attend courses on ‘professional ethics’ and will not be able to leave Iran.

Elnaz Mohammadi, sister of Elahe Mohammadi, was detained for a week in February for unknown reasons.

The death of Mahsa Amini, 22, after he was arrested by the vice squad for allegedly violating the strict dress code imposed by the Islamic Republic, sparked demonstrations across Iran.

Hundreds of people, including dozens of members of the security forces, were killed during the demonstrations.

Thousands of protesters were also arrested, accused by authorities of taking part in riots incited by Israel, the declared enemy of Iran and Western countries.

Local media recently reported that more than ninety journalists have been arrested or interrogated since the demonstrations.
