“We are shocked and saddened by the unexpected passing of Samantha Woll, our board chair,” the synagogue announced in a Facebook post. “May her memory be a blessing.”
Police were called to the scene with reports of a person lying on the ground unresponsive, and when they arrived they found a “trail of blood” leading them to Woll’s home, the Detroit Police Department statement said. Authorities believe the crime took place in the home.
The case has now been assigned to the Detroit Police Department’s homicide unit for investigation. Police Chief James White said in the statement that the stabbing is under investigation, but the motive is not yet known.
“Understandably, this crime leaves many questions unanswered,” White said. “The matter is under investigation and I ask the entire community to remain patient as investigators carefully examine every aspect of the available evidence,” stressing that it is “important that no conclusions are drawn until all available facts have been assessed.”
The FBI in Detroit is already assisting police in the investigation, but Michigan State Police have also been assigned to assist local authorities in this investigation, Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced.
“My heart breaks for her family, friends, synagogue and all those who were fortunate enough to know her. She was a source of light, a beacon for her community, who worked hard to make Michigan a better place.”, Whitmer said in a statement.
Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan said Woll’s death “leaves a huge hole in the Detroit community.” In a statement, Duggan said that a few weeks ago they both celebrated the synagogue’s recent renovation. “It was a project she led with great pride and enthusiasm,” Duggan said. “The entire city, together with his family and friends, mourns his tragic death,” the mayor added.
Detroit police promise more information about Samantha Woll’s death next Sunday.
