Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, Iran’s Foreign Minister, warned the United States and Israel this Sunday that the situation in the Middle East “could become out of control” if they did not “immediately put an end to crimes against humanity and the genocide in Gaza’.
“Today the region is like a powder keg (…). I would like to warn the United States and the Israeli puppet regime that if they do not immediately put an end to the crimes against humanity and genocide in Gaza, everything is possible at any time and the region could become uncontrollable,” said Hossein Amir- Abdollahian in a statement in Tehran with his South African counterpart Naledi Pandor.
The international community fears an extension of the war that started on October 7 between the Islamist movement Hamas and Israel and greater involvement of the Lebanese Hezbollah, an ally of Hamas, backed by Iran.
The United States has already announced a reinforcement of its military assets in the region.
The Iranian minister warned that “any miscalculation in the continuation of the conflict, genocide, massacres and forced migration of the inhabitants of Gaza and the West Bank could have serious consequences” for the region and “against the interests of the aggressive countries.”
The South African minister called on the international community to “pay much more attention” to the situation of the Palestinians in the context of the “shameful attack” on Gaza.
According to local authorities, more than 1,400 people, most of them civilians, were killed in Israel in a violent attack launched by Hamas on Israeli territory on October 7.
In the Gaza Strip, at least 4,651 Palestinians, mostly civilians, have been killed in Israel’s relentless bombing in retaliation, according to health authorities from Hamas, which controls the Palestinian territory.
Iran applauded the Hamas attack but said it was not involved in what happened.
