NATO says Putin is failing, but admits caution about Russian nuclear forces

The NATO secretary general stressed on Tuesday that Russian President Vladimir Putin “is failing in Ukraine” because his strategy “does not go according to plan”, although he admitted caution about the possible use of nuclear weapons by Russia.

“President Putin is failing on Ukraine and his annexation attempt [das regiões separatistas]partial mobilization [de reservistas] and reckless nuclear rhetoric represent the most significant escalation since the beginning of the war and reveal that he knows this war is not going according to plan,” the head of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) said today, speaking in a news conference. at the Brussels headquarters.

For Jens Stoltenberg, “Ukraine has the momentum and continues to make significant progress, while Russia increasingly resorts to horrific and indiscriminate attacks on civilians and critical infrastructure.”

On the eve of a two-day meeting of allied defense ministers on Wednesday and Thursday in Brussels, the leader of the Atlantic Alliance stressed that, for this reason and despite the fact that “NATO is not a party to the conflict”, he has been providing support “with a fundamental role” to defend Ukraine’s sovereignty, ensuring that such support will continue “for as long as necessary”.

At a time when the Kremlin is threatening the West with nuclear weapons, Jens Stoltenberg stressed that “President Putin’s nuclear threats are dangerous and irresponsible.”

“Russia knows that a nuclear war cannot be won and should never be fought”, but in any case “we are closely monitoring the Russian nuclear forces”, he assured.

He added: “We have not seen any change in Russia’s position, but we are watching.”

Russia invaded Ukraine last February.

The military offensive launched on February 24 by Russia in Ukraine has already caused the flight of more than 13 million people -more than six million internally displaced persons and more than 7.6 million to European countries-, according to the most recent data from the UN, which places this refugee crisis as the worst in Europe since the Second World War (1939-1945).

The Russian invasion – justified by Russian President Vladimir Putin, with the need to “denazify” and demilitarize Ukraine for Russia’s security – was condemned by the generality of the international community, which has responded by sending weapons to Ukraine and imposing them on Russia. political and economic sanctions.

The UN presented as confirmed since the beginning of the war 6,221 civilian deaths and 9,371 wounded, highlighting that these figures are far below the real ones.
