“Shocked” by the controversy, Guterres denies having justified Hamas terrorism

UN Secretary General António Guterres says he was “shocked” by the “misrepresentations” of his statements about Hamas made on Tuesday during a meeting of the UN Security Council and denies justifying terrorist acts of Hamas.

“I unequivocally condemned the horrific and unprecedented acts of terror on October 7 perpetrated by Hamas in Israel. Nothing can justify the deliberate killing and kidnapping of civilians or the firing of rockets at civilian targets,” Guterres stressed in a brief statement in response to the controversy.

The Portuguese justified his statement with the need to give context to suffering what Palestinian civilians are going through. Guterres admitted that he spoke of grievances of the Palestinian peoplebut he emphasized that in doing so he also stated: “‘But the grievances of the Palestinian people cannot justify the terrible attacks of Hamas'”.

António Guterres affirmed on Tuesday before the UN Security Council that the Hamas attacks “do not come from nowhere” and recalled that the Palestinians were “subjected to 56 years of suffocating occupation”, statements that led the Israeli Government to call for the Immediate resignation of the UN leader.
