US draft resolution rejected at UN Security Council

A draft US resolution on the recent escalation of violence in Israel and the Gaza Strip and the subsequent humanitarian crisis in Gaza was rejected this Wednesday by the UN Security Council with vetoes from Russia and China.

The US draft “unequivocally rejected and condemned” the “egregious terrorist attacks by Hamas” on October 7 and demanded the “immediate and unconditional release of all remaining hostages” captured in Israel and held by the Islamist movement in Gaza.

The project received 10 votes in favor, two abstentions and three votes against, including two vetoes by the permanent members of the Council (Russia and China).

The surprise attack by Hamas on Israel on October 7 resulted in the death of more than 1,400 people, most of them civilians, and the capture of 220 hostages, triggering a new conflict in the Middle East, which this Wednesday turns 19 days old.

Israeli bombings also continue on the Gaza Strip, killing more than 6,500 people, almost half of them children, and wounding more than 17,000, according to the local Ministry of Health, controlled by Hamas.

Israel also imposed a complete siege on the Palestinian territory, cutting off water, fuel and electricity supplies, causing a critical humanitarian situation.
