Russia warns that the catastrophic situation in Gaza could get worse

Russia warned on Thursday about the catastrophic humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip, which it attributed to Israeli bombing, and warned that it could worsen if Israel launched a ground operation in the Palestinian enclave.

“The situation is catastrophic and could become worse, as difficult as it is, once the ground operation begins [por parte de Israel]Russian Presidency spokesman Dmitry Peskov said at his daily press conference.

For Peskov, it is necessary to “call everyone to a ceasefire” and not “condemn the actions of only one party.”

The spokesperson for the Russian presidency also assured that his country will continue efforts in the UN Security Council to find a solution to the conflict.

Regarding the next visit to Moscow by Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas, Peskov did not give a specific date, but confirmed that it will take place soon.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov reiterated today that Russia is calling for an immediate ceasefire between Israel and Hamas and “the resumption of negotiations on the creation of an independent Palestinian state, which was promised to them for almost 75 years. ”

Israeli Ambassador to Russia Ben Zvi stated that the ground operation in the Gaza Strip “will start with a surprise.”

Israel declared war on Hamas, which controls the Gaza Strip, after an attack by the Islamist movement on October 7 – in which rockets were launched and more than a thousand militiamen invaded – that left more than 1,400 dead and 5,000 injured. and 220 hostages.

Since then, Israel has responded with continued bombardments and specific ground attacks that have left more than 6,500 dead and 17,000 injured on the Palestinian side.
